Spend the time it takes to check out everyone:

  • Partners
  • Investors
  • Employees
  • Service Providers
  • Grant Agencies
  • Key Customers
  • Competitors

Call several of the people these folks have done business with.  Ask them for references.  They should provide them freely.  If not, there you go…
